A group show with 4 artists, organised by EwaldxRos _ art encounters & tours, 7 till 20 March 2024
As guest curators in OX Space, EwaldxRos proudly presents the group show Power Play from March 7–20 March, with recent work by the artists Katharina D. Martin, Pip Passchier, Alexandra Phillips and Mirjam Somers.
The four artists showcase works related to the topic of power, as well as the various ways we approach it.
This may concern mundane objects, compelling structures in our society, the dynamics between humans and animals, as well as clear symbols of political and eventual tyrannical power, displayed in video, sculptures and objects.
One wall is covered with four large vertical banners by Katharina D. Martin with various colour
combinations, representing fictional countries. But instead of portraying harmony, as in political
alliances, they are questioning the status of supremacy, hinting at a “future where power is exercised
with compassion and responsibility, rather than fear and coercion.”
The work of Mirjam Somers covers a spectrum of disciplines, ranging from drawings, texts, and film
to installations. Most of her work involves the human condition, be it in relation to other species, like
the animal world, or specifically humans. Her video, at OX Space, presents the relationship between a
man and a Chihuahua, inviting the viewer to reflect on the balance between humans and animals.
Alexandra Phillips’ multifaceted oeuvre includes drawings as well as sculptures and objects, that are
partly handmade and partly objet trouvé, hinting at lost functionalities and their former lives. With
her work, she feeds the public debate of value and identity. What is this object directly across the
viewer? The display of her sculptures at OX might add to slight confusion, and rightfully so.
With their merry colours, the works of Pip Passchier seem to hint at childhood drawings and objects,
seen at playgrounds. With her playful approach, the artist questions the structures of contemporary
society that do not seem to serve people, given the rising number of burnouts. How playful are we?
In the former bookshop Donner, OX Space is giving way to experiments with space and to what might be desirable as an addition to the city centre. The city centre hosts a range of chain shops to be found everywhere, which add no characteristics to the city, while OX Space provides a significantly different flavour.
